The Awful Truth was formed in early 2002 by Tony Besson, Mike Lawrence, and Ron Baker - three musicians who had not performed in front of an audience (other than their kids and many unlucky Karaoke spectators) in almost a decade. When we realized that 3 guys just weren't enough to shoulder the massive amount of rock we could bring, Dave Field was added to the mix. The idea of getting out of the house in addition to putting to use our unparalleled musical talents was too much for us to resist. Starting out mainly covering current alternative songs with one or two 80's covers comprised the first shows starting in late 2002. The feedback was better than expected for three guys just out having fun. The comments on the older songs which were done in an up-to-date alternative/punk style were extremely rewarding. It was easily visible at our early shows that the older "remade" songs were the most popular as heads were bopping, applause was louder and dancing was rampant. A niche was eyed as we didn't want to be another cover band playing the same songs which were being overplayed on the radio stations as well as by every other cover band in the area. Soon the set list was growing and evened out as the number of "remade" songs caught up to the current songs being performed. Now, everything ranging from Metallica to Cyndi Lauper is included in the set list. The styles in which the songs are performed usually make it difficult to name the song prior to the first chorus and this is by no means a classic rock band. The most common response now is "You guys are so much fun". We think the attitude of each of the members reflects the music and performance (which is we are doing this first and foremost to have fun). Each member has done the serious band stuff in the past and now just want to get out and play for all their friends and modest following that has been built in a short time and grows with every show. It is amazing to see how many people dance at the shows as this is new to our performances. No matter the diversity of crowd, the shows always include something for everyone and a good time is certain to be had. |
